torre dell’orologio

this is my favourite building on piazza san marco because it’s mechanism is just awesome, considering that it was built in the 15th century.

the astrological clock face is made of lapis lazuli, the hands are gold plated. there are two giant statues with huge hammers on top of the tower which ring the bell. they actually move. twice a year, statues of an angel and the three magi come out from inside the tower, defile past the statue of mary and even take a bow.
