while it is usually really crowded at daytime (there are masses of people queuing up to get inside of the palazzo ducale or basilica di san marco) it is almost empty at night.
that way, you get a feeling of how huge this place actually is.
sometimes you can still enjoy the music played by the string players which are hired by the overwhelmingly expensive cafés.
