versace for h&m? the apocalypse is near
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! i never thought that this might happen but when i read the newspaper this morning i found myself confronted with a pretty nasty headline: h&m is about to launch a collection in co-operation with donatella versace. versace for h&m. blerghhh.
i never really understood this whole luxury designers for h&m thing. oh, well, i did: it’s all about making money. by sticking a designer’s name under their logo, h&m could slightly raise their prices and people would go all nuts to get hold of a piece of karl lagerfeld, lanvin or whatever. but what’s the point of having an “expensive designer piece” if it is of bad h&m quality, sometimes even made of really nasty fabrics? seriously, i wanted to understand this fascination for cheap designerwear and had a look at some of the h&m pieces several times and they always were a huge disappointment. i felt like those designers kind of sold their souls. they lost a bit of their magic. as versace aficionado i’d always say to myself, “at least donatella isn’t doing this”. oh well…
of course lots of designer stuff is overpriced and of course it is not only he quality you pay for but also the name. but still, i’d rather save my money for that one special piece, made in italy (lots of brands don’t do that anymore either) and of excellent quality (hey, one can always wait for sale), than buy ten of cheap h&m-quality pieces which were made in china and happen to have “designer” written on them. it’s just like buying a knockoff.
